A Relaxing Time

by The Boatswain | November 15th, 2006

Duty in Cuba continued to be VERY good. Since we had a full time maid, we were able to take advantage of several R&R trips to nearby islands. Ellen and I (and a bunch of others, of course.) took a long weekend trip to Haiti, which, in those days, wasn’t quite as messed up as it is today. Three of us couples joined together and hired a full time taxi (24 hours a day) for our time on the island and we toured all over, taking in a rum factory, a staged VOODOO ceremony, etc. We also stayed in a “4-Star” hotel at 1/3 of the regular rates, as it was a tourist off-season!

Ellen and a big group of dependent wives were also given a trip to San Juan, Puerto Rico. The kids and I took advantage of the beach at the mouth of the fresh water river while she was gone. Note the dark sand, soft, but volcanic sand which is why it’s not white!
